Description
This course mainly focuses on:
Regular script (kai shu) is the most upright and standardized style in Chinese calligraphy, like the “standard portrait” of Chinese characters. Originating in the late Han Dynasty, it matured during the Wei and Jin dynasties, and reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty—where the boldness of Yan Zhenqing, the sharpness of Liu Gongquan, and the precision of Ouyang Xun collectively shaped its golden age.
Unlike the cursive “grass script” or the archaic “clerical script,” regular script features clear strokes and balanced structures: horizontal lines lie steady as water, vertical lines stand firm as pillars, and 撇捺 (pie and na strokes) stretch gracefully like wings. This “discipline” is no constraint, but a distillation of Chinese character aesthetics—each character’s framework holds the secret of balance. Take the character “永” (yong, meaning “eternal”): it contains all basic strokes of Chinese characters, revered as the 入门 model for learning regular script (“The Eight Principles of ‘Yong'”).
Learning regular script is a wonderful way to touch Chinese culture. It teaches focus: you plan before writing, and control your brush with poise. More importantly, it reveals the wisdom of “being square inside while round outside”—though the characters look upright, they hide the vitality of ink and brush. Pick up a brush, start with one stroke at a time, and you’ll find: mastering a character is like understanding a piece of history.
